What is the Panchang?

A Panchang is a very important and useful document of Vedic Astrology or ‘Jyotish’. It is a combination of Hindu calendar and almanac. It is called by various names, as it is called Panjika in the Eastern parts of India, whereas in the southern parts of the country it is called Panchangam. In the northern part of India it is called Panchang.

A layman may understand Panchang as a book that Astrologers use to check various auspicious dates and dates of festivals etc. However, Panchang provides much more than this. Panchang provides details of placement and transit of planets of planets, details of Hindu ephemeris, other astronomical details related to Hindu calendar. One important point that needs to be considered is that the Hindu calendar is based on the movement of Moon.

The details in Panchang are very useful for the Astrologers that come handy in making astrological calculations while making birth chart, finding dashas, calculating various critical periods as per birth details for predicting life events. Based on the calculations the effects of various planets and Nakshatras on the life of individuals can be found and analysed.

Panchang has five elements based on which various calculations and predictions can be made, these are:-

Vaar or day of week

This is the day as per the Hindu calendar, which comprises week days from Sunday to Saturday, with each day comprising of 24 hours that are further divided into ‘Hora’. Each day starts at Sunrise and ends on next day’s Sunrise.

Tithi or date as per hindu calendar

The tithi is generally the relationship between the Sun and the Moon. It is the lunar day that is based on the movement of the Moon. There are 30 lunar days in a month. Out of this, 15 lunar days fall under the waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha) which is the bright 15 days and other 15 lunar days which are the dark days under waning Moon (Krishna Paksha).

Nakshatra

Nakshatras are the constellations. As per Vedic Astrology, there are 27 Nakshatras and these are divided among the zodiac (360 degrees), with each Nakshatra having a span of 13 degrees and 20 minutes. Each zodiac sign has a span of 30 degrees, therefore each sign has about two complete Nakshatras and some portion of third Nakshatras. Like planets, the Nakshatras are also used by Astrologers for making predictions of past, future, basic traits of the individuals, correct timings marriage or other important events in life, and for commercial purposes like making buying or selling decisions and right time to invest.

Yog

Yogas are there in natal chart and sub-divisional charts and these are benefic and malefic in nature. These exist due to planetary combinations and their relationships in the horoscope. There are 27 Natural Yogas and there are 28 Temporary Yogas.

Karan

There are two Karans in one tithi, therefore, in a Lunar month comprising of 30 tithis, there are 60 Karans. Out of these four Karnas are fixed and their occurrence in a lunar month is fixed, balance fifty six Karans comprise of 8 repetitions of Seven karans (that are not fixed) in a sequence in the lunar month.

Panchang is a very useful and important document for Astrology and a must for consulting for accurate predictions.
